What’s What in the World of Construction Equipment

Emily Bieger

It’s spring, and you can hear the engines starting to rev! Construction equipment is in high demand, as building continues to soar throughout the nation! Before you make the substantial investment in heavy machinery, make sure you have the right equipment for your job.

Excavators: Used for digging, demolition, handling materials, trenching, earthmoving…the excavator uses a boom, dipper, bucket, and attachments for a broad range of uses. Excavators come in a range of sizes, 4,000 lbs. to 158,000 lbs. Mini-Excavators are second only to CTL’s as the most popular Case machine in East Tennessee.

Backhoe/Loaders: The Swiss Army Knife of construction equipment and CASE’s flagship product. Utilized for excavation, material handling, demolition, and landscaping, the backhoe has both a front-facing loader bucket or blade and a rear-facing backhoe with bucket.

Bulldozers: Utilized to clear, dig, and level land. The dozer has metal tracks and a 4 or 6-Way blade that pushes earth, sand, brush, and debris.

Wheel Loaders: Utilized for material handling on concrete, asphalt, gravel, or dirt with a large front-end loader bucket. Wheel Loaders articulate in the middle and offer higher speeds for large jobsite material handling.

Compact Track Loaders: CTL’s are the most sold type of construction equipment on the market today. Extremely versatile rubber track machines utilized on nearly every construction project in East TN. Multitude of attachments are available for every task including buckets, trenchers, mulching heads, forks, brush cutters hammers, dozer blades and more. Although they look like skid steers, they generally have more horsepower and can carry heavier loads.

Skid Steers: Like the CTL but wheeled for use on concrete and asphalt, these also are available with multitude of attachments. The consensus is that tires hold up longer and are far smoother riding on hard surfaces.

Blake Wilson, general manager at Contractor’s Machinery Inc. (CMI), says the most important factor to consider when buying heavy equipment is the type of work you are planning to pursue and what you are looking for from your equipment dealer. Since 1971 CMI has been keeping contractors working in East Tennessee.

Before you make any large machinery purchases, be sure to visit our CASE Equipment page. Review the extensive list of equipment available and talk to a CMI-Case representative! CMI wants this decision to be the very best for you and your business!

Technology advances in the construction industry are on the rise.

Technology Advances in the Construction Industry

Contractors Machinery

Whether or not one contracted the Coronavirus in 2020, virtually everyone has been impacted in one or way or a thousand. The construction industry is no exception. With complaints of increased costs of materials and lack of workers, the business had to get creative to cut costs in the future. Technology has entered into the field at a faster rate than ever before, and here are a few of the changes that will aid in a healthy rebound for the industry:

Virtual everything. The creation of mobile construction apps allows contractors to collaborate “on-site” virtually, accomplishing real-time inspections, accurate measurements from phone cameras, and public meetings without having to leave their own offices. Over 81% of construction companies are now using mobile devices to increase efficiency.

Smart advanced wearables. From safety helmets all the way down to steel-toed boots, smart technology is being implemented into safety-required wearables. This technology does everything from monitor fatigue and collision to contact tracing. Smart technology is now available in helmets, headsets, glasses, vests, watches, gloves boots…83% of contractors believe this new technology will drastically improve site safety.

Drone use. Not only used for aerial photography anymore, drones aid in mapping large areas and providing real-time data that accelerates construction decisions and helps streamline the entire process. Use of drone technology in the industry continues to increase over 200% yearly.

Construction Management Software Solutions.  Construction goods rose five percent over three years (ending in 2020) and interest rates are now rising. Excellent Construction Management Software Solutions are essential to manage inventory, budgets, documents…virtually every aspect of the construction business. Each software package differs slightly, so prospective owners are encouraged to explore carefully in order to best meet their business needs.

Contractor’s Machinery offers ProCare, the most comprehensive planned maintenance and heavy machine support in the industry. Click here to learn more about ProCare, which comes standard on all new heavy equipment orders.

A year of “shut-down” did anything but shut down the progress in the construction business. Now is the time to consider the technological advances in this cutting-edge industry!

Enhanced Durability on Tough Applications

CASE is introducing a new mulcher-head attachment that is built for performance and durability. This heavy-duty mulching and land performance platform is in stock now – just in time for landscaping season. Compatible with CASE skid steers and compact track loaders, the attachment ships standard with high flow (HF) configuration and can be easily converted at the dealership for use with enhanced high flow (EHF) hydraulics systems on 90-HP+ machines.

Built with heavy duty materials, the mulcher is ideal for land clearing, site prep, removing trees and brush and trail maintenance applications. It features a variable two-speed motor that automatically adjusts the motor displacement to maximize rotor speed and torque to changing material loads.

Insured optimal performance with the first pass, the drum-style rotor system features a smooth rotor surface, spiral tool pattern and innovative tool shape for smooth, efficient cutting, while bolt-on AR400 steel skid shoes reduce plowing of material for a more uniform final result. A pin-on push bar with serrated ears adjusts to three positions to better direct material to feed the mulch.

The new mulcher comes standard with proprietary double-carbide teeth and a severe-duty body construction for enhanced durability in tough applications. Available options include a samurai knife tool that provides a finer and more consistent chip size, and an optional deflector door designed to help contain debris as well as achieve finer debris sizing.

Excavation and trench safety tips and best equipment for the job

Excavation and Trench Safety

Contractors Machinery

Trench fatalities and injuries pose serious risk in construction, so trench safety must be a top-priority at any jobsite. Statistics from the Bureau of Labor show that an average of 25 workers are tragically killed in trench-related accidents each year, with cave-ins being responsible for 75% of these unfortunate, but preventable deaths. Trench collapses cause hundreds of worker injuries each year, all equally preventable.

With our Contractor’s Machinery, Inc. CASE and TORO trench equipment, you can avoid the dangers of collapses and other trench-related worksite incidents.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), here are some other proven and effective ways of preventing hazards during trench and excavation related work:

  • Slope it: Sloping and benching – Slope or bench trench walls by cutting back the wall at an angle inclined away from the excavation. With this protective system, workers can prevent a cave-in and save lives.
  • Shore it: Hydraulic Shoring – Shore trench walls by installing aluminum hydraulic or other types of supports to prevent soil movement or cave-in.
  • Shield it: Protective Shielding – Shield trench walls by using trench boxes or other types of supports to prevent soil cave-ins.

Designing a protective system like the suggestions listed above can be complex because you must consider many factors: soil classification, depth of cut, water content of soil, changes in weather or climate, surcharge loads and other operations in the area. If you have any questions about any of our products and what equipment is best to maintain trench safety, feel free to reach out to us. We’re here to help!

Benefits to both buying and renting construction equipment

Buy or Rent Construction Equipment

Emily Bieger

When you’re looking into purchasing heavy duty construction equipment one of the biggest questions is often, “Should I buy or should I rent?” The truth is there is no wrong or right answer. There are benefits to both options. We hope in identifying some of these benefits, you can better determine what works best for your crew and your business.

The Benefits of Renting Equipment:

Renting gives you a little more room to roll with the punches and be more flexible as a business. As both work crews and jobs ebb and flow with social distancing guidelines and lifting of restrictions, you can take on more or less machinery as you need to without the long-term financial burden.

If you have long distance jobs, renting can save you the time and cost of hauling machinery long distances.

Renting equipment also helps when there is a sudden boom of new work. You can increase production without maxing out your fleet or having to wait for your current machines to finish a job. Renting allows for less strain on your profits while you continue to book more business.

The Benefits of Purchasing Equipment:

For some businesses, ownership is more of a reality than ever before thanks to lower financing and leasing rates. Purchasing equipment can also be a better solution for certain types of work. Social distancing has created less time in the office and on public roads creating more government projects, residential construction, and business improvements. In addition, landscapers, contractors, and utility companies may experience a boost in work for home and business remodels.

If you expect to see more work in these areas, expanding your fleet allows for more flexibility in meeting new demand while staying fully prepared for the boost in construction work as COVID-19 restrictions are lifted. Each payment option available helps to pay off your investment while adding to the value of your business.

Whether you’re ready to buy or need to rent for the time being, Contractor’s Machinery, Inc. has got you covered with a full range of heavy-duty equipment to meet all your construction needs, not to mention financing and leasing options. Click here to check out our full catalogue of equipment or request a quote today. If you’re interested in renting find out more here.
